Samantha Harmon is the Cofounder of qb. consulting, a purpose-driven strategy and communications firm, delivering a fresh perspective on ESG strategy and reporting for Fortune 500 companies, brands and nonprofits. Progressive Recruiting: A Purpose Driven Reverse Job Fair and World Cafe

A free event exploring what it means to have progressive recruiting habits including featured hiring organizations that value DEI.

REGISTER HERE

Who We Are

Turning Basin Labs is a cooperative staffing agency owned and operated by workers. Our vision is to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace by placing fair chance and diverse workers in high road jobs. Part of how we will achieve our vision is through hosting monthly events where we will explore how to improve DEI throughout the recruitment journey and connect workers and employers committed to DEI.

About This Event

This event will explore what it means to have progressive recruiting habits and highlight employers who do so through a reverse job fair. We are looking to partner with Oakland/Bay Area based organizations committed to workforce development, supporting their local community and economy, and DEI. We hope to bring awareness to the broader job seekers in Oakland/Bay Area of these purpose-driven organizations and their initiatives to better serve the community and their employees.

Event Structure

The structure of the event will include lightning talks from the employers and then we will move into a world cafe where we break into small groups and discuss various subtopics around progressive recruiting habits and how to support job seekers in navigating the recruitment journey within tech. Finally, we will end with networking and a job fair where organizations will have recruitment tables and a chance to get to know workers better.

Speakers

This is a “reverse” job fair because organizations will pitch their company to job seekers. Employers will focus on the impact they’ve made on the community, the initiatives they run to intentionally build inclusive workplace culture and any other relevant initiatives around their commitment to workforce development. Success stories, learnings, and toolkits to support them in living out their values are all welcomed here.

World Cafe Topics:

  • What are the current hurdles that the Oakland/bay area community face when considering a tech job? How can we breakdown these barriers?

  • What are real ways companies are minimizing unconscious bias in the recruitment cycle and creating more inclusive recruiting habits?

  • How can we reduce the wage gap and ensure growth opportunities within the organization?

Each session will be ~15-20 minutes and will be supported by a moderator.

A roundtable uncovering how to authentically build DEI into the workplace to create an inclusive brand and attract and retain DEI talent.

About this Event

Turning Basin Labs is a cooperative staffing agency committed to building business value by placing workers at employers that are committed to building sustainable and inclusive workplaces.

Each month we are hosting an event following the recruitment journey and exploring how to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts throughout.

The first step of the recruitment journey starts with talent discovering your organization. In our transparent marketplace, the internal culture of your organization is your external brand. In order to attract diverse talent, you must create an inclusive culture and therefore, an inclusive brand. Our featured Black History Month event aims to bring together employers, funders, and workers to explore what it means to create an inclusive brand and how to do it right.

This month's event partner Think Human will bring their perspective around their experience helping organizations create inclusive brands. Think Human is a workplace culture consulting company that's purpose is to unleash the soul of businesses through expert coaching and training.

The structure of the event will be a roundtable format. We want to be sure to highlight worker experience and perspective as well as employer success stories around their DEI initiatives. We will provide resources and skills that employers can implement tomorrow to help build inclusive brands that will support the growth of your organization.

The event will be hosted at Oakstop, a place-based enterprise, offering affordable workspace, event space, and arts programming to catalyze collaboration, professional development, and economic sustainability for creative entrepreneurs and small local businesses.
